Regardless of the height and width of the "pencil pocket," the top was turned under about ⅝" and hemmed ½" from the top edge.

In addition to the two vertical rows of topstitching, the "pencil pocket" was fastened to the right chest pocket via edge stitching on its side and lower edges, with its centermost edge flush to that of the right chest pocket.
