Analysis, part 4 - Front Zipper and Facing

The ENT jumpsuit closed in the front via a black zipper which was edge stitched around its perimeter to further secure it.

Here are some additional examples of the front zipper edge stitching:

The underside of the ENT jumpsuit was support with a front facing, which was sewn onto the zipper and front seam allowance.

The front facing was, of course, an additional layer of fabric which was cut separately and visible through holes in the exterior of some jumpsuits, such as this screen-used distressed Reed jumpsuit:

The front facing was wider than most (if not all) of the other front facings we'd seen on the modern-era Star Trek uniforms; it extended to slightly past the centermost edges of the front pockets and waist straps.

The bottom of the front facing was rounded and even with the bottom of the front zipper.

The facing appeared to be a consistent width up to about lower armscye level, then it gradually curved outward toward the shoulders.

Although it narrowed some from the chest to the shoulder, the front facing extended onto the shoulder seam.

The front zipper and front facing were both sewn into the collar assembly.

The outermost edges of the facing were hand sewn to the jumpsuit underneath the pockets and waist straps to secure it from flapping around or folding inappropriately.

Because of the additional layers at the center front (front + facing + front seam allowance + front facing seam allowance + zipper tape = 5 layers), impressions of the front seam allowance were occasionally visible.

Of course, on distressed uniforms, sometimes the actual seam allowances were visible:

Note that the front zipper tape was "sandwiched" between the exterior front and the front facing (with their corresponding underturned seam allowances).
