Analysis, part 10b - "Pencil Pocket," Topstitching

Perhaps the most obvious feature of the "pencil pocket" was the rows (columns?) of vertical topstitching spaced ¼" apart across its entirety. Some of these were decorative, while others fastened the "pencil pocket" to the right chest pocket.

The "pencil pocket" was divided into thirds, with equidistant rows of vertical topstitching spanning from one side to the other.

There two rows of topstitching that fastened the "pencil pocket" to the right chest pocket were the two that divided the pocket into thirds, and these rows of topstitching also compartmentalized the "pencil pocket."

Generally speaking, the two fastening rows of topstitching were slightly easier to see than the decorative rows.

The width of the "pencil pocket" varied (at least in relation to the number of vertical rows of topstitching, which were all presumably a consistent ¼" apart).

The majority of the ENT jumpsuits we observed had "pencil pockets" with three rows of vertical topstitching ¼" apart between the fastening rows of topstitching, resulting in a total pocket width of 3" (with three equal compartments, each 1" wide and with three equally spaced rows of ¼" topstitching between them).

In fact, every member of the main (Starfleet) cast often had a "pencil pocket" topstitched in this manner.

For the record, this included Hoshi (who, of course, wore the female version of the uniform).

However, many in the cast also sometimes had "pencil pockets" which only had two rows of vertical topstitching between the fastening rows - including Captain Archer himself!

The previous example of Hoshi's "pencil pocket" notwithstanding, this appeared to be the standard for the ladies' uniforms; Hoshi's "pencil pockets" nearly always had 8 vertical rows of topstitching:

This disconnect of standards was present not only both genders of the main (Starfleet) cast, but supporting/extras' ENT jumpsuits, too.

Some of the female ENT jumpsuits had pencil pockets with only a single vertical row of topstitching between sections!

NOTE: The two ENT jumpsuits pictured above may, in fact, be the same uniform, which would mean that this particular occurrence may have only been a singular anomalous incident rather than an additional "standard" for the ladies.
