As you probably noticed, the back of portion of each waist strap was buttoned to the back of the jumpsuit.
This appears to have been done for aesthetic purposes only; the waist straps were structurally and functionally unnecessary, as were the back buttons otherwise.
(If anything, the buttons slightly detracted from the functionality of the jumpsuit, since the buttons were sewn all the way through the back elastic channel, thus fastening the elastic to the jumpsuit body at those points.)

The buttonholes were vertically centered over the back "arrows" of the straps.

Oddly, the buttons always looked black on screen and in many photos, but sometimes they had a distinctly bronze/copper-esque quality ... note that they looked black in the show:

Now check out these apparently bronze/copper-colored buttons on the back of Archer's jumpsuit!

The above auction photo wasn't an isolated incident; the back waist strap buttons on the screen-used ENT jumpsuit "Lynsioux" photographed and shared look bronze/copper in every photo!

Were the buttons always bronze/copper and they just appeared black on screen? Were the buttons actually bronze/copper and only painted black for some reason, and we're seeing "aged"/"distressed" buttons? Was there a phase of using the bronze/copper buttons that either never made it on screen or never showed up on screen? Which is more "screen-accurate" when constructing your replica?!?
